Summary

ABSTRACT The Bender Gestalt Test, which consists of a series of geometric patterns according to the Gestalt principles, is a useful and practical tool for measuring visual perception and motor coordination skills, determining the level of development and developmental problems and distinguishing whether the problem is organic or psychological. In light of the years of experience and clinical observations, the second version of the test was developed Bender-Gestalt II, and psychometric properties were determined on a large multicultural sample. Unlike the first version of the Bender-Gestalt, the new version have been significantly modified in terms of stimulus cards, application and scoring. With the addition of recalling stage; Bender-Gestalt II has become to be a measurement tool that can also cover the memory. It also has provided additional information with the addition of the tests of observation-record-form, motor and perception test; providing insights to asses these skills of the individuals and test performances. In this study, Bender-Gestalt II is aimed to realize the 4.0-17.11 age group standardization and norm study, with the enriched version of multi-aspect assessment. For this purpose, the data are gathered with 2691 participants in the approximately equal number of boys and girls at the ages of 4.0 and 17.11, representing all levels of the socioeconomic structure. For Bender Gestalt II Copy and Recall scores, reliability coefficient was constructed in between the scorer. Additionally, because of the fact that each participant were recalled the different test items, only the Copy scores, dividing the test into half, test-retest and Cronbach’s Alfa reliability coefficients were estimated. The structure validity of Bender Gestalt II is studied by explatory factor analysis by dividing standardization sample to two distinct groups (1. group: 955 participants at the age of 4-7 ; 2. group: 1738 participants at the age of 7-17). For criterion related validity, different measurement tools were used, that are capable of assessing cognitive ability, short term memory, mental development level, visual perception, memory and developmental fine motor skills and are suitable for evaluate various age groups. And these measurement tools were inspected for the correlation values of the points of Bender Gestalt II. Regarding of these results it is shown that the test has valid and reliable psychometric characteristics. Standard score tables that are corresponding to the tables of the raw scores of Copy and Recall test were calculated for all monthly age ranges, and norm values were obtained for the ages from 4.0 to 17.11. Consequently, it is observed that the Bender Gestalt II test achieves valid and reliable psychometric values for the Turkish children in the age group of 4.0-17.11.
