DROUGHT DROUGHT MANAGEMENT PROPOSAL FOR UNINTERRUPTED AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION ADAPTING TO CHANGING CLIMATE CONDITIONS, CASE OF KÜÇÜK MENDERES BASIN

Project no. 1011 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016

Summary

With this project, it is aimed to plan an appropriate product pattern for future periods in order to maintain uninterrupted agricultural production despite changing climate conditions. Within the scope of the project, the impact of climate change on the agricultural production of Küçük Menderes Basin was investigated in the Aegean Region, which is expected to be most affected by climate change in our country. It is known that the agricultural drought that will be caused by the precipitation deficit and the rising temperature expected to be seen in our region as a result of the climate change will significantly suppress our vital water presence and soil quality. The sustainability of the living life, which will be directly affected by the restriction of drinking and irrigation water, is possible by updating (dynamic) measures to be taken due to changing hydrological deficiencies. It is clear that the potential water shortage will lead to a reduction in the need for agricultural water and consequently force the product pattern to change. In addition, another important factor that forces the agricultural product pattern to change is the expected deterioration in soil quality parameters. The expected decrease in the amount of irrigation water and deterioration in water quality are expected to lead to salinisation due to insufficient washing in the soil and excessive evaporation. The successive annual precipitation gap and temperature increase will increase the salinity and alkalinity of the soil and increase the amount of residual salt in the following years as a result of low washing rates. These conditions may cause our important agricultural lands to become unusable over the years. Within the framework of the project, the impact of drought on soil properties was analyzed spatially. It is thought that the effect of drought can occur at different levels depending on soil structure and topographic conditions. For this reason, soil salinity which is expected to increase in parallel with increasing evaporation has been examined on the basis of soil groups and as a result of the project, product pattern planning has been proposed in the form of 10-year periods for the next 80 years. The proposed product design has been prepared by taking into consideration the durability characteristics of the plants depending on the expected increase in temperature and salinity in the coming years.
