INVESTIGATION OF ELECTRIC PRODUCTION POTENTIAL OF GEOBACTER SULFURREDUCENS WITH DIFFERENT SUBSTRATE RESOURCES IN MICROBIAL FUEL CELLS
Project no. 21197 · Status: Kapanmış · 2019
Summary
Alternative energy sources from renewable sources are crucial for the development of sustainable production strategies. In particular, biomass energy from systems such as the microbial fuel cell, which has attracted attention in recent years, offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach. Considering these advantages, microbial fuel cells(MFCs), renewable energy sources obtained from biomass are ideal systems to obtain energy, but for these systems to become widespread, the effect of different parameters on the system should be examined by using model organisms to understand the operation of microbial fuel cell systems. Proper use of the substrate by cells in biological systems will increase the yield of the productions. Trials have been conducted using two carbon sources such as acetate and glucose. Since growth was observed in the experiments with acetate and no growth was observed in the experiments with glucose, the reactor studies were carried out with acetate. The double chamber microbial fuel cell (DMFC), which is widely used in laboratory scale, was used to understand the functioning of the system. Nafion membrane was used to carry the protons that will occur in the anode compartment to the cathode compartment without disrupting the operation of the system. In this study, electricity generation potential of Geobacter sulfurreducens, which is a model organism used in microbial fuel cell systems, has been observed by using substrate. For this purpose, acetate substrate was used and the effect of substrate concentration on electricity generation in microbial fuel cell systems was investigated.
