Modeling and optimization of the adsorption performance of activated carbons obtained from olive stones impregnated with different chemicals
Project no. 23896 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022
Summary

Pollutants in water are becoming a major threat day by day, negatively affecting clean water resources and aquatic life. Adsorption is a frequently used method for the removal of these pollutants and obtaining drinkable water, and developing suitable materials for adsorption is one of the important research topics.

In this project, after a series of physical and chemical processes, activated carbon was produced from olive stones, which is a factory waste and widely available in our country, especially in the Aegean Region, to be used in adsorption studies. The impregnation process was carried out with three different chemicals (ZnCl2, H3PO4, KOH). After this stage, activated carbon production is completed through the pyrolysis process. The adsorption performances of the developed olive stone-based activated carbons on three different types of contaminants (copper ion (Cu), methylene blue (MB) and 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)) were examined.

Following the kinetic study, the equilibrium time was determined and the effects of multiple parameters such as concentration, temperature, pH and adsorbent amount were examined. Optimum adsorption conditions were determined by experimental design. The study was dimensioned by applying different kinetic and equilibrium model equations.

The adsorption performance of the produced olive stone-based activated carbon material on three different types of contaminants was examined in comparison with commercial ones. The results of the adsorption tests are promising. It is anticipated that this study, which will be carried out with this activated carbon material developed from waste olive stone, will make a significant contribution to sustainable waste management and economy.
