ESTABLISHING A BLOOD DERIVED EYEDROPS PRODUCTION LABORATORY
Project no. 23 · Status: Kapanmış · 2015
Summary
Tear contributes to the preservation of the integrity of the ocular surface epithelium with the substances it contains and protects against infections. The tear forms a lubricant layer and prevents mechanical damage on the ocular surface and also contributes to the optical properties of the eye. Dry eye disease is a very common clinical condition characterized by decrease in tear and may have different etiological causes. Commonly used treatment method for dry eye patients is to keep the eye surface moist with artificial tear drops. However, while the artificial preparations are lack of many natural substances found in natural tears, they can also cause additional problems due to the protective agents they contain. Blood products, which have been used in recent years, have become an important alternative to artificial tear drops. Among the blood products, autologous (produced from patient’s own blood) serum is most commonly used. With this project, it was aimed to obtain serum from patients with dry eye under appropriate conditions, and to present the serum to the patients after microbiological tests were performed. The established laboratory will be an important center not only for the patients who apply to Ege University, but also for all the patients in need in our region when it starts to serve after obtaining the necessary permissions and it will also play an important role for new scientific researches in this field.
