ULTRASOUND MODULATED FUNCTIONAL BIOMEDICAL OPTICAL IMAGING
Project no. 730 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016
Summary
Optical imaging has been preferred in many clinical applications such as breast cancer diagnosis, functional brain imaging and imaging of skeletal muscle structure in recent years due to some disadvantages of other imaging methods. Near infrared (700 - 1100 nm) diffuse optical imaging has an important role in the diagnosis of breast cancer. In this way, most patients can avoid unnecessary biopsy. Diffuse optical imaging applications provide researchers with important information on breast cancer characterization. In the diagnosis of breast cancer, hemoglobin concentration is the main factor in distinguishing benign and malignant tumors. Hemoglobin concentration increases due to angiogenesis, which means the formation of new blood vessels in cancerous tissue due to tumor growth. In this project, imaging of tissue optic characteristics under ultrasound modulated laser illumination is discussed. Firstly, ultrasound modulated behaviour of laser light has been examined theoretically. For this purpose, necessary simulation studies were carried out. In the second stage, some experimental applications were made. In this context, an in-vitro (phantom) medium mimicking breast tissue and tumor was designed. By using the optical imaging parameters produced from the analysis of the speckle images (patterns), the optical characteristics of the buried tumor-like object were determined according to the coordinates.
