Evaluation of the Effects of Three Different Dentifrices on the Mineral Loss of Bleached Enamel

Project no. 20662 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2019

Summary

The aim of this in vitro study is to evaluate the effects of three different toothpastes on the enamel surface after the use of a whitening agent with 40% hydrogen peroxide content. In this study, 30 human premolar teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons were used. Teeth were separated to obtain enamel samples with a 3 mm thickness from the buccal surfaces. Then the samples were divided into 5 groups (n=6). Group I: Sound enamel samples, control group; Group II: Bleaching (40% hydrogen peroxide); Group III: Bleaching + Colgate Total; Group IV: Bleaching + Sensodyne Repair&Protect; Group V: Bleaching + BiominF. The surface morphology of the samples were scanned with Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Point analysis with X-ray Photoelectron Spectrocopy (XPS), field analysis with Energy Dispersed X-ray Spectrometry (EDS) were performed to determine the mineral contents (Ca, P, N, O, F, C, Na, Sr, Sn, Si, Mg, Al, Zn) on the enamel surface. The data were subjected to One Way Variance Analysis (ANOVA) and Tamhane Post Hoc Test (p = 0.05). SPM and SEM images depicted the presence of mineral deposits in the toothpaste applied groups while areas indicating mineral losses were observed in the bleached group. The surface roughness was increased after bleaching, but it was not statistically significant. The results of XPS and EDS analyses, showed that the mineral content of enamel was decreased after bleaching procedure. It was determined that there was an increase in the mineral content in the paste-treated groups after bleaching. It may be concluded that toothpastes may have a repair effect on the morphological changes and mineral loss on enamel surface.
