Synthesis of New UV Protective Reactive Dyes for Cotton Farbrics
Project no. 22709 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2021
Summary

Due to the depletion of the ozone layer, there is a continuous increase in the incidence of skin cancer caused by the ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the sun. Applying UV protective finishes to clothing fabrics is an effective step to prevent this situation.

With the presented thesis, the synthesis and structural characterization of 3 new chemicals (5, 8, 11) that can be used as UV protectors for cotton fabrics were carried out.

The compounds synthesized within the scope of the thesis were prepared using a 2-step reaction chain. In the first step, an aromatic ortho-hydroxy aldehyde compound and an aromatic amine were linked by an imine bond. Then, in the second step, a diazo coupling reaction was carried out between an aromatic amine bearing a reactive group and the imine compound prepared in the first step. The structures of the 3 final products obtained were confirmed by spectroscopic methods. The synthesized compounds carry reactive groups capable of covalent bonding with cotton fabrics. Thanks to this feature, they will be able to be bonded to cotton with washing resistance. In addition, it is expected to show good UV Shielding properties thanks to the imine-phenol

keto-amine tautomeric conversion feature that will occur in case of exposure to UV light in the compound skeletons. Since this feature will prevent the UV radiation-induced degradation of the dyes on the fabrics to which they are applied, it will have an effect on increasing the color fastness value.
