Determination of the structural and physical properties of some meteorites fell in Turkey

Project no. 20711 · Status: Kapanmış · 2019

Summary

In this project, bulk volume, bulk density, grain volume, grain density and porosity of Bursa, Didim, Kayakent, Sarıçiçek and Kemer meteorites that fell in Turkey were systematically investigated by Pycnometry and Three-Dimensional Laser Scanning methods. Meteorites are classified as iron, stony and stony-iron. With the three-dimensional laser scanning method, which is one of the methods used to illuminate the structures of meteorites in these different classes, the bulk volume and bulk density of the meteorite can be obtained by scanning the surface with a laser. In the pycnometry method, the grain volume, grain density and porosity of the meteorite are determined by passing the gas through the meteorite, with helium gas in one chamber and the meteorite sample in the other. When the bulk volume and bulk density values from the three-dimensional laser scanning method are considered together with the grain volume and grain density values obtained from the pycnometry method, porosity values can be reached.

This project is important in terms of obtaining more information about the structures of the asteroids, which are thought to come, and have the risk of impacting the Earth, by determining the density and porosity properties of meteorites. It is necessary to increase the number of such studies and to pave their way. With this study, international and national contributions have done in the field of Meteoritics from our country.
