IMPROVING ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF TERRY FABRICS USING POLYBUTYLENE TEREPHTHALATE (PBT) YARNS AND NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
Project no. 709 · Status: Kapanmış · 2015
Summary
The purpose of this project is to the production of terry fabrics by including PBT fiber in fabric structure to improve elasticity of fabric and to increase the pile mass per unit area of fabric. Therefore, terry fabrics will become properly elastic for sportswear (training suits, elastic bands for hands, legs head), bedding (elastic bad coverings, elastic bed sheets..), product for covering car sets, summer camp coverings and also summer beach cloths (summer elastic dresses, that can play the role of towel), and more absorptive to water. For this purpose , core spun yarns with PBT-as the core and cotton-as the sheath material (Ne 16/1), were produced. PBT filaments with different filament counts were used as core. PBT core improved elasticity without affecting soft feel of cotton. Use of PBT containing yarns in ground part of terry fabric causes additional shrinkage after thermal treatment and increases the mass of piles in a unit area due to the increasing pile density. This in turn improves water absorption. The results of the weft breaking strength and breaking elongation, fabric elongation and permanent elongation in weft direction after stretch testing, surface water absorbency before and after laundering, fabric thickness and weight, and air permeability tests showed that the differences between the fabric with 100 % cotton weft yarn and the fabric with 78 dtex PBT yarn were statistically significant. Particularly, it seems that the use of 78dtex core spun yarn offers better results in terms of fabric elongation and water absorbency. In conclusion, unlike elastane which causes heavier fabrics and lower air permeability, PBT yarn offers beter properties compared to 100 % cotton yarn in terry fabrics. Thus, terry fabrics with PBT yarn can be ideal for daily casual clothing.
