Project no. 23936 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022

Summary

The content of the project, in which the hobnailed doors in Izmir province are studied, consists of the decorations created with embossed nails on the surfaces of the doors located at the entrance doors of both monumental and civil architecture buildings in the city centre. Within the scope of the project, the examples identified in the city centre were photographed and the decorations of some of them were drawn. The doors are introduced separately in detail. In the evaluation section, the doors are analysed in terms of their location, the type of building to which they are attached, construction techniques and decorations.

The gates with carvings found in Izmir are found in building types such as inns, mosques and residences. Although limited in number, the production methods of these doors show that they were produced with similar methods. Metal plates were nailed on the wood with nails to ensure the strength of the doors. At the same time, decorations were also formed by hammering the nails on the metal surface within a system. Although mostly geometric arrangements are seen, floral ornaments were also included in the composition. In some doors, it was determined that nails were driven in a mixed order without ornamentation. Although the ornaments seem quite simple compared to other decorative arts, some compositions show the reflection of the Classical period ornamentation understanding to the 19th century ornaments.

The fact that the hobnailed doors, which attract attention both in residences and monumental buildings, will be analysed comprehensively for the first time within the scope of this project and the publication of this project will affect the documentation of the doors in other cities and will increase the number of examples of such doors, which are among the essential elements of our cultural assets.
