CLASSIFICATION OF MULTI-DIMENSIONAL STRUCTURE OF CHARACTERISTICS STRENGHTS OF INDIVIDUALS
Project no. 824 · Status: Kapanmış · 2018
Summary
In this study, a psychometrically reliable and valid measurement scale had been developed to measure character strengths in the context of positive psychology. Character Strengths Inventory, which was proposed by Peterson and Seligman (2004) and measures positive individual traits, which constitute one of the foundations of positive psychology, in 6 factors and 24 sub-dimensions was adopted as a model. Factors in the model are wisdom (originality, curiosity, love of learning, judgement, perspective), courage (valor, perseverance/industry, zest, integrity), humanity (kindness, capacity to love, social intelligence), justice (fairness, citizenship/responsibility, leadership), temperance (forgiveness, modesty, prudence, self-regulation) and transcendence (appreciation of beauty, gratitude, hope, humor, spirituality). In the study, 714 participants in the age range of 25-73 (mean = 40.27, sd = 11.22) for the adult sample and 568 participants in the age range of 17-24 (mean = 20.43, sd = 1.62) for the university student sample had been reached. The data collection technique used is snowball sampling. Scale items were selected from the IPIP(International Personality Item Pool). Positive-Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), Life Satisfaction Scale and Adult Psychological Resilience Scale were used for validity analysis. In the reliability analysis, it was observed that the Cronbach alpha internal consistency / reliability coefficient for both the university student and the adult samples was distributed between ? = .72 and ? = .95. For the university sample, the dimension with the lowest ? coefficient was self-control, while it was the capacity to love for the adult sample, and it was seen that the subdimension with the highest reliability for both samples was spirituality.
