Summary

This study aimed to remove 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and methyl orange (MO), the frequently encountered hazardous pollutants for environmental safety and human health with a wide range of industrial uses, from wastewater by catalytic reduction. For the synthesis of the catalysts to be used, imidazolate and terephthalate-type metal-organic network (MOF) structures were synthesized under different conditions in the presence of biochar, and the catalytic performance and stability of the obtained materials were investigated. Cu-based HKUST-1 was selected for the terephthalate-type MOF, and ZIF-67 was selected for the imidazolate-type MOF. The effects of using sunflower stalk cellulose-derived biochar in the synthesis of the MOF structures on the resulting material were investigated. Obtained materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, N2 adsorption-desorption, TGA, and Raman analyses to reveal the structural and morphological properties. In addition, the effects of parameters such as temperature, NaBH4 content, pollutant concentration, and catalyst amount on the reaction efficiency and reusability of the catalysts were investigated for the reduction reaction in the presence of the synthesized catalysts. According to the results obtained under the same experimental conditions, CoCN@BC2 was determined as the catalyst exhibiting the highest efficiency for the catalytic reduction of 4-NP, with 100% conversion achieved in 1.5 min and a reaction rate constant of 3.301 min-1. For the catalytic reduction of MO, HKUST-1@BC1 was determined as the most efficient catalyst, with 100% conversion achieved in 60 s and a reaction rate constant of 0.0717 s⁻¹ in its first use. However, when the catalyst was reused, with the increased presence of biochar, HKUST-1@BC3 behaved more stably in the reaction medium, allowing for a higher conversion value in 1 min.
