Experimental and numerical investigation of fine sandy seabed sediment movement under the effect of propeller jet stream

Project no. 22183 · Status: Kapanmış · 2020

Summary

With today’s developing technology ships that berth to ports with the help of tugboats can maneuver by themselves with the movement of bow thruster and azipods. However, this situation emerges as a scouring/deposition problem at the front of the quays and piers. Investigation of the flow area caused by ship propeller on the quays and piers is important in terms of determining the scouring at the seabed. Within the scope of this project, the water jet formed by ship propellers and sediment movements on seabed is investigated by experimental and numerical methods. As a result of experiments with very fine sand, new equations and diagram suggestions were presented. During the experiments, using the three-dimensional flow velocity measuring device “Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter” (ADV), efflux velocity will be redefined with velocity measured with ADV. ADV measurements are correlated with sediment concentration measurements. In addition to experimental studies, numerical model studies will be carried out using Flow3D and results are compared with the experiments.
