Project no. 32442 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2024

Summary

Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) is a plant with high bioactivity, utilized across various sectors, particularly in medical and cosmetic applications due to its added value. The formation of nanoparticles and nanocomposites aims to impart different functional effects to various materials and/or biocomponents and to synergistically enhance their existing properties. In this context, metal salts such as AgNO₃, TiO, and ZnSO₄.7H₂O are frequently preferred nanoparticle components, while bacterial cellulose stands out as a polymer that is easily integrated into various modification and composite formation applications.

In this project, it was aimed to produce a biocomposite with high bio-functional properties by generating nanoparticles from jujube extract and integrating them into a bacterial cellulose medium. For this purpose, nanoparticles were formed from the extracted jujube fruit using different metal salts, and the extract and the resulting nanoparticles were characterized. Cellulose was obtained using the Komagataeibacter xylinus strain for biocomposite production, and integration with the produced jujube nanoparticles was achieved. The obtained composites were analyzed in terms of their characteristic and structural properties. As a result of the experiments, jujube was extracted with a yield of 77.85%. The extract showed 92.95% antioxidant activity, while in nanoparticle formulation, this effect was observed at a rate of 66.65%. Hemagglutination testing revealed that the extract had virucidal inhibitory activity against IBV D274. The jujube–silver nanoparticles were successfully produced more efficiently than those from other metal salts, with a diameter of 113.4 nm. Biological activity tests of the biocomposites formed through nanoparticle integration showed antimicrobial effects against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. SEM and XPS analyses confirmed the Ag composition within the composite, and the attachment of nanoparticles to the composite along with the formation of a nanofiber network-like complex was observed.

As a result of the project, it was confirmed that jujube can be transformed into a nanocomposite with high bioactivity through the use of bacterial cellulose and silver salt.

Keywords: Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba), silver nanoparticle, bacterial cellulose, biocomposite, antioxidant effect, antimicrobial effect, antiviral effect
