Summary

ABSTRACT

Aim: In this study, it was aimed to examine how health care workers and puerperium perceive body privacy in labour and to evaluate their views on the birth gown.

Materials and Method: This study was conducted with 11 health care workers working in the labour ward of Ege University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and 18 women who gave birth in this hospital. The qualitative design of the study was phenomenological. Face-to-face individual interview technique was used to collect the data. The data were collected with a semi-structured interview form. The research data were analysed in MaxQda plus qualitative data analysis programme. Within the scope of the research, inductive qualitative content analysis was used to create themes and codes.

Findings:

Based on the interview data obtained in our study, six themes were identified: perception of privacy, emotions felt, situations affecting privacy, ways to protect privacy, features of the birth dress and suggestions. Participants emphasised that protecting privacy during the birth process made them feel safer and positively affected their birth experiences. While women preferred a comfortable, spacious, sweat-proof and more closed design in terms of privacy in terms of maternity clothes, it was emphasised that it should be a clothing that would enable healthcare professionals to work practically during childbirth.

Conclusion and Recommendation: The results of the study reflect the various opinions of women and healthcare professionals about the privacy of labour. In addition to medical requirements, there is a need for a birth outfit that prioritises the choice and privacy of the woman giving birth and provides practical use. It is suggested that future studies should focus on more details in order to increase awareness of this issue and design a better birth gown.

Keywords: privacy, birth gown, healthcare worker, labour, puerperium
