Prospective study of the value and efficacy of PpoFEV1 measurement in the setting of minimally invasive surgical approaches to lung cancer surgery

Project no. 25219 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022

Summary

Surgery is the most curative method of lung cancer treatment. Lung cancer awareness is increasing in society and around the world. The number of patients requiring surgery is growing. The general principle of lung cancer surgery is to anatomically resect the part of the lung containing the tumor. After this surgery, the remaining lung tissue must be sufficient to allow the patient to survive. Some tests and formulas are used to calculate the functional capacity of the intact lung tissue to be removed and left behind. Most of these formulas are based on some surgical procedures, such as a large thoracotomy, which is referred to as an open surgery. Nowadays, adding minimally invasive surgical methods to the daily routine leads to revising all these studies and formulas. It is predictable that open surgical methods and minimally invasive methods will cause different functional losses in patients. The purpose of this study was to compare the postoperative functional status of patients who underwent open surgery with that of patients who underwent minimally invasive surgery. Approximately 100 patients who underwent anatomical resection with minimally invasive methods for lung cancer in our clinic will be included in the study. All patients enrolled in the study underwent pulmonary function testing with spirometer preoperatively and at 3 days, 1 week, 1 month, and 2 months postoperatively. Age, sex, preoperative FEV1, histopathologic diagnosis, surgical procedure performed, perioperative analgesic methods, postoperative complications, length of hospital stay, and predicted postoperative FEV1 (PpoFEV1) will be calculated and recorded. Whether the calculated PpoFEV1 value differs between the open surgery group and the minimally invasive surgery group and the relationship between PpoFEV1 value and postoperative FEV1 value will be analyzed prospectively.
