Development of a Reusable Functional Polymer for the Removal of Brilliant Blue Dye from Beverages: Synthesis, Characterization, and Analytical Applications
Project no. 33143 · Status: Kapanmış · 2025
Summary

In this study, a novel functional polymeric adsorbent composed of N-cyclohexylacrylamide (NCA), 4-vinylpyridine (4VP), and divinylbenzene (DVB) monomers was synthesized for the efficient removal of Brilliant Blue (E133) dye from aqueous media and real beverage samples. The structural and surface properties of the obtained NCA-4VP-DVB copolymer were comprehensively characterized using FTIR, SEM-EDS, TGA, and BET analyses. The adsorption behavior was systematically investigated as a function of pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and temperature. Under optimum conditions (pH 2.0, 10 mg adsorbent, and 30–60 min contact time), the system reached equilibrium rapidly and achieved high removal efficiency. The kinetic data showed an excellent fit to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R² = 1.000), while the isotherm data were best described by the Langmuir model (R² = 0.9852). The maximum adsorption capacity was calculated as 769.23 mg g⁻¹. Thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic. The high removal efficiencies obtained for real beverage samples, ranging from 95% to 99%, demonstrated that the adsorbent maintained its effectiveness even in complex matrices. Overall, the results indicate that the developed polymer offers a high-performance, rapid, and practically applicable adsorption system for the removal of Brilliant Blue dye from beverage samples.
