Summary

Chitosan is a linear aminopolysaccharide obtained by deacetylation of chitin. The functional amino groups it contains, the advantage of being a cationic polymer, and the preparation of nano-sized chitosan particles; It has aroused great interest in the biomedical, cosmetics, food and pharmaceutical sectors. Thyme plant has been used for many years among the public for health problems such as cough, upper respiratory tract inflammation, stomach and intestinal disorders, kidney stones and as a natural antiseptic. Thyme essential oil has antimicrobial and antioxidant effects due to the presence of various phenolic components such as thymol, carvacrol and cimen. Bioactive compounds such as polyphenols found in olive leaf (Olea europaea) offer a traditional treatment for various diseases, including reducing fever, preventing or curing malaria, and treating and preventing hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and protection against cancer. Semi-solid formulations are preparations applied to the skin or accessible mucous surfaces. They are designed to be applied to the skin or mucous membranes due to the subcutaneous interference, local effects, softening and protective properties of the active ingredients added to their structure. In this study, chitosan microparticles were prepared using ionic gelation method and spray dryer. Thyme oil and olive leaf extract were encapsulated into the obtained chitosan microparticles. Then, thyme oil and olive leaf encapsulated microparticle was transferred to the glycerine-starch ointment formulation, which is a semi-solid preparation. The stability properties of the final formulation, pH and viscosity parameters were investigated. Finally, the antimicrobial effect of formulation on Balb-c mice was investigated within the scope of the study.
