Efficiency of Ganglion cell complex analysis using optical coherence tomography in early diagnosis of glaucoma
Project no. 21515 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2020
Summary

Purpose: To evaluate the usability of macular ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness analysis in early diagnosis of glaucoma.

Materials and Methods: Patients who were diagnosed as glaucoma suspects in Ege University Ophthalmology Department underwent complete ophthalmological examination as well as macular GCC thickness analysis and RNFL thickness measurements using OCT and visual field tests including 24-2 SİTA and central 10-2, in every 3 months. The correlation of GCC thickness analysis with RNFL thickness and visual field test sensitivities were evaluated.

Results: A total of 156 eyes of 100 patients were included in the study. Mean age was 54.6±11.5 (28-74) years, mean follow-up period was 26.4±3.6 (6-36) months. At the initial examination, mean intraocular pressure was (IOP) 18.16±3.8(10-26) mmHg, mean C/D ratio was 0.36±0.19(0.1-0.8), mean RNFL thickness was 100.88±13.3(64-128) μm and at the last visit mean IOP was 17.4±2.6 (10-23) mmHg, mean C/D ratio was 0.4±0.18(0.1-0.8) and mean RNFL thickness was 102.06±10.69(67-111) μm. Mean GCC thickness was 101.2±11.31(82-133) μm at the first visit and 102.4±10.8(80-133) μm at the last examination. A positive correlation was detected between peripapillary RNFL thickness and ve macular GCC thickness in total, superior and inferior areas in every visit including the first one. Macular GCC thickness was found to show positive correlation with related 10-2 visual field mean sensitivity (p< 0.001, p<0.001, respectively).

Conclusion: Macular GCC layer was shown to be the first place to be effected in early glacuoma in experimental studies and this study determined that macular GCC thickness , positively correlated with central 10-2 visual field test light sensitivity.
