Determination of chromosome folding activity of triifluralin in stevia plant (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni)

Project no. 22416 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2020

Summary

<p>Due to the rapidly increasing obesity, diabetes and other diseases around the world, the search for healthy and natural sweeteners is increasing rapidly. Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni) has the potential to be a significant alternative food sweetener due to its glycoside content, which has a much higher taste than sucrose. However, the breeding and production of stevia is quite difficult due to the perennial nature of the plant, foreign pollination and low germination potential. There is no widespread cultivation and sufficient scientific studies on stevia, which was first produced in our country in 2009. The main methods used in stevia breeding are selection, mutation, synthetic breeding, repetitive selection, and polyploid breeding. With polyploid breeding, better adaptation can be achieved thanks to features such as increased organ and cell sizes and yield. In addition, secondary metabolites increase qualitatively and quantitatively (amount and quality) with the production of polyploid plants in medicinally important plants such as stevia. Antimitotic agents are used to obtain polyploid plants. The most common antimitotic agent known is colchicine. However, colchicine has a toxic and mutagenic effect on both the user, the animal used and the environment. In addition, the use of colchicine has negative side effects such as causing mixploid and chimeric structure formation on the plant. In this project, trifluralin will be used as an antimitotic agent for polyploid stevia with different dose and duration trials. Morphological, cytological and biochemical analyzes will be made on the plants exposed to the application and grown. At the end of the study, the success contribution of trifluralin as an alternative to colchicine on the production of stevia polyploid plants and its importance in stevia breeding will be evaluated. In addition, polyploid stevia plants obtained by trifluralin as a result of the project can be used in stevia breeding programs.Due to the rapidly increasing obesity, diabetes and other diseases around the world, the search for healthy and natural sweeteners is increasing rapidly.
