Investigation of Thermal Properties of Sariçiçek Meteorite by Calorimetric Techniques
Project no. 451 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017
Summary
Meteorites are known as fragments that were excavated from the asteroids’ surfaces then reach the Earth’s surface, and they contain highly important information about the internal structures and surfaces of these asteroids. It is highly important to determine thermodynamic properties like heat capacity and thermal conductivity among the physical properties like density, porosity, volume of meteorites. By the aid of Thermogravimmetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) methods used for determining such thermodynamic properties, one could get information on the thermal histories of meteorites. In this project, by using one of the Sariçiçek fragments (coded as #SC55 and sampling from interior, edge and fusion crust, three pieces from each) it has been determined that phase transition temperatures, enthalpy changes and heat capacities of the minerals that construct the Sarıçiçek meteorite by these techniques. Also the change in mass by function of temperature and time was determined with these techniques for the first time. By the results of this project, we contributed to the literature by obtained physical parameters that characterize the thermal history and structural change of 4Vesta asteroid, whose is known as parent body of Sariçiçek meteorite, for the first time.
