STRENGTH AND DEFORMATION PROPERTIES OF CLAY SOILS TREATED WITH CEMENT, LIME AND FLY ASH

Project no. 746 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016

Summary

The present study examines the deformation and strength properties of clay soils stabilized with cement, fly ash and lime. For this reason, clay soil that consists of 70% kaolin and 30% bentonite was constituted and this soil is admixed with cement, cement-fly ash, lime, and lime-fly ash combinations. The specimens were cured for different days and tested under unconfined compressive device to investigate the effects of additives and curing times on the mechanical behavior of clay soils. Harvard miniature compactor was preferred as it imitates the compaction of sheep-foot rollers. The treated specimens showed a brittle behavior compared to the untreated soil specimens and the deformations were much smaller. Deformations were also decreased due to the increment of curing times. Highest unconfined compressive strength was achieved in specimens with 6% lime-3% fly ash combination. Therefore, lime-fly ash additive is able to replace cement additive for stabilization of specimens from the point of mechanical and economical view. Secant moduli were calculated depending on the curing time and additive type and the moduli were confirmed to be in coherence with the unconfined compressive strength of the soil specimens.
