Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Different Simulation Modality in the Development of Urethral Catheterization Skills in Nursing Students
Project no. 804 · Status: Kapanmış · 2018
Summary
Background: In parallel with the developments in science and technology, the use of simulation in nursing education has become more widespread. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of training with different simulation modality in urethral catheterization skills training. Methods: This study was conducted as a randomized controlled study between November and December 2018. The participants of the study are sophomore nursing students who voluntarily participated in the study (n=80). The participants were randomly assigned to the following groups: in the first group partial urethral catheterization model was used (n=26), in the second group whole body model was used (n=26) and in the urethral catheterization model with poster was used (n=28). Finally, all students were evaluated by hybrid simulation method. Results: The mean score of urethral catheterization knowledge test of students showed statistically significant increased (p<0.05). The urethral catheterization skill performance mean scores did not show a statistically significant increase in the whole body model group and in the partial urethral catheterization model group (p>0.05). However, it significantly increased in the partial urethral catheterization model with poster group (p<0.05). In addition, there was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of urethral catheterization skill performance scores in three different models and implementations with hybrid simulation (p<0.05). Conclusions: As a result of the simulation-based experiences, an increase in the mean score about the urethral catheterization knowledge of the students in the whole simulation group was observed, but there was a statistically significant increase only in the mean scores of the students in the partial urethral catheterization model with poster group. In this context, it is recommended to use medium fidelity simulation to improve the psychomotor skills of the students in nursing education.
