Project no. 21807 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2020
Summary

This research focuses on recognizing and promoting children with autism by considering children with autism from the perspective of childhood sociology. Considering that autism is experienced differently for each child, the research defines autism and the phenomenon associated with children with autism. It aimed to reveal the level of awareness about all the phenomenon that were the subject of the research. In the study, which was planned as a methodologically qualitative and phenomenological research, the formal sociology of Georg Simmel was used theoretically. Data on the facts that constitute the subject of the research were obtained through in-depth interviews with the founders of private family counseling centers affiliated to the İzmir Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of Family and Social Services. According to the findings obtained through the analysis of the narratives, children with autism are a phenomenon that should be addressed sociologically because of the areas they need and the social environment they are involved in. The different characteristics of children with autism negatively affect their socialization process and integration into society. This situation prevents the recognition of children with autism and therefore causes a low level of awareness towards children with autism. In this regard, it was suggested by the participants to carry out large-scale awareness studies supported by government policies.
