Summary

The aim is to provide the morphometric measurements which are the quantitative strucrural analyses of trabecular and cortical bone on dental volumetric tomography (DVT) images obtained at different kilovoltages, and to compare those finding with the morphometric measurements obtained on micro-computed tomography images which are considered as the gold standard.Ten bone samples which were 45x100 mm in size and were obtained from five dentulouse sheep mandible were utilized in this study. Each of the bone samples were initally images with micro-CT and then, with DVT using three different kilovoltages (80,85,90 kVp). A total of 30 DVT and 10 micro-CT images obtained with different kVp resulted with 40 images with 240 ROIs (30 images x 6 ROI=180 DVT; 10 images x 6 ROI= 60 micro-CT). Image analysis was performed using ImageJ software, including following parameters: Fractal dimension (FD),bone volume (BV), bone volume fraction (BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular seperation (Tb.Sp), cortical thickness (Co.Th) and total cross- sectional area (Tt.Ar). Micro-CT measurements and measurements of different kVp of DVT were compared with paired t-test. Bland-Altman plot analysis was used to evaluate the agreement between DVT obtained with 3 different kVps and micro- CT. Additionally, one-way ANOVA test was used to determine the differences between three kVp values. In all test, p was accepted as 0.0001. All measurements that were performed on DVT images obtained at three different kVps were higher than micro-CT measurements, except for bone volume (BV). Statistically significant differences were observed among measurements from DVT and micro-CT regarding all variables (parameters) (p<0.0001) except for bone volume ratio (BV/TV) and cortical bone cross-sectional area (Tt.Ar). No statistical significant differences were found between measurements performed on DVT images that were obtained at different kVps (p>0,0001). Our findings suggest that DVT has the potential to be a useful research and diagnostic tool in the assessment of bone quality. However, it is important to determine the level of kVp with the best diagnostic capacity by considering the patient dose.

Keywords; bone microstructure, dental volumetric tomography, micro-computed tomography
