Phytochemical Analysis of Umbilicus erectus DC Species by LC-MS/MS, and Evaluation of Anticholinesterase Activity

Project no. 23564 · Status: Kapanmış · 2021

Summary

Phenolic compounds, which are the most common in the plant kingdom, are a group of secondary substances with a wide spectrum of biological activity. Many molecules with different chemical structures attached to this group have anticholinesterase activity. Cholinesterase inhibitors are primary drugs used in the symptomatic treatment of Alzheimer's Disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by widespread loss of central cholinergic function. Umbilicus erectus species, which is popularly known as umbilical herb and belongs to the Crassulaceae family, is used as a diuretic in traditional treatment and as a wound healer in boils. Quantification of quercetin, myrcetin, luteolin, daidzein, chrysin, galangin, chemferol, morin, genistein and naringenin molecules in the methanol extract obtained from this species collected from Tire/İzmir within the scope of the project was carried out by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Then, the acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activities of the extract were determined according to the Ellman method. The anticholinesterase activity study, which will be carried out with the project, has not been reported on the basis of genus, and the quantification study on the basis of species has not been reported in the literature so far. With the successful realization of the project, the phytochemical content of the selected phenolics will be determined, and a primary study will be carried out on the anticholinesterase activity of Umbilicus species.
