Summary

This study includes the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) from organic wastes under acetogenic conditions, with mesophilic temperature anaerobic digestion. Sugar is used as a substrate to represent organic wastes rich in carbohydrates. During the scope of the study, the sugar concentrations were changing in the range of 4-20% in constant hydraulic retention conditions (HRT-1 day) and the optimum sugar feeding concentration was found. In the second stage of the study, the optimum hydraulic retention time was determined by keeping the optimum sugar concentration which was determined in the previous stage constant. For this purpose, trials were made by changing hydraulic retention times between 1-5 days. The max VFA value was determined at the constant hydraulic retention time, then the maximum retention time (HRT) was changed by keeping constant the obtained substrate value and the maximum VFA value was found. Although there are publications on VFA production from sugar in the literature, the main feature of the study is that the optimum substrat concentration for the max VFA value. Otherwise, it is to provide comparison by applying HRT in two different reactors as immobilized reactor which using pumice stone selected as material and suspended reactor and the advantages of using immobilized reactor. Considering the results, it was observed that the highest VFA value was 6775mg / L and 4% concentration in the studies performed with the immobilized reactor at the sugar concentrations of 4.5, 10 and 20% for the suspended reactor study, the maximum VFA value is 5357mg /L at 4% sugar concentration. As a result of HRT studies, the increase in the amount of VFA in the immobilized reactor is higher than the suspended reactor. The results is provided to see that the comprasion between the immobilized reactor and suspended reactor by showing the appropriate parameters for the highest VFA quantity.
