DEVELOPING CARE PROTOCOLS AND GUIDELINES AIMED AT MENTAL PROBLEMS
Project no. 823 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016
Summary
Purpose: The research was conducted with the purpose of developing care protocols and guidelines aimed at mental problems. Method: Research was made in mixed method. The population of the research is made of the inpatients treated in a public hospital mental health and diseases department between April 2018 and May 2019. To collect data, care protocols for mental problems and as Pre-test, and Post-Test Psychiatric Patient Independence Scale were used. Descriptive analysis, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and Kruskal Wallis Test were used to evaluate the data. Findings: It is determined that, nursing diagnoses of the treated patients within the scope of the research were mostly “ineffective individual coping” (64.5%), “discomfort in sleep pattern” (29%), “ineffectiveness in maintaining health” (19.4%) and “deterioration in thinking processes” (19.4%), respectively. Before the nursing care of the patients, while the mean score of the Psychiatric Patient Independence Scale was 11.38 + 7.11, it was 8.8+8.03 after the nursing care. A statistically significant difference was found between the mean scores of the Psychiatric Patient Independence Scale of the patients (p=0.01). Although the dependency and independence levels did not change after the implementation of the care protocols and guidelines aimed at mental problems, a decrease was found in the Psychiatric Patient Independence Level Scale Score averages. The most commonly used nursing diagnosis was “ineffective individual coping”. Nursing interventions for ineffective individual coping diagnoses were also found to be the most applied among all nursing diagnoses. Conclusion and Suggestions: After the application of care protocols and guidelines, the targeted result was achieved and the independence level of the patients increased. The most commonly used nursing intervention was ineffective individual coping. It is recommended to use care protocols in psychiatry clinics in order to increase the quality of care, to provide standardization in care and to ensure job satisfaction of employees and to develop new protocols according to patient needs.
