Summary

In this study, the situation of sheep breeds bred in eleven provinces in the Marmara Region was determined with current data, taking into account the yield type, tail shape and origin. The research is based on the data obtained in 2021 through the HAYBIS system belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Turkey. These data are based on the sheep assets of the provinces in the Marmara region according to the classification of statistical regional units.. The total number of sheep in the Marmara Region is 4.332.818. While the total number of domestic sheep breeds is 3.565.740 heads, the total number of imported sheep is 770.078. The mean of thin-tailed sheep in 11 provinces is 3.664.216 heads, and for fat-tailed sheep this value is 577.750 heads. The average of half-fat-tailed sheep is 90.852 heads. In order to make sustainable sheep production, regional and national sheep breeding strategies should be developed. In order to do this, it is necessary to determine the current situation and to reveal the numbers and ratios based on regions. This research will be a preliminary research for the studies to be carried out within the framework of these purposes.
