Summary

Ballistic impact injuries have become one of the leading causes of mortality since two centuries In recent years physicists, engineers and medical scientists have tried to demonstrate the biomechanics of gun sh ot woun ds with numerical meth ods and experim en tal observations. Currently, the finite element method (FEM) is the most widely used numerical method among the studies related to ballistic wound injuries. However when the finite element method is used for the penetration analysis, the path of the projectile in skull is subjected to extremely large deformations which will introduce errors due to distortion of elements. The aim of this study is to develop a model to dynamically simulate the penetration of a projectile to human skull via the meshless smoothed particle hydrodynam ics (SPH) method. In this study, biomechanical parameters like force and penetration depth were calculated and the results were validated with the experimental data given in literature.
