The main objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of the type of refrigerants, subcooling, and superheating on the performance of an ejector-expansion refrigeration cycle (EER) and EER with an internal heat exchanger (IHX) installed between the liquid separator and the evaporator (EERHX). The performance of the EERHX is compared to that of the EER under the same conditions. Energy and exergy analyses are performed to determine the rates of energy transfer, exergy transfer, and exergy destruction within all the components and the EER and EERHX systems. Coefficient of performance (COP) for cooling and the exergy efficiency of the whole system are calculated. The performances of the EER and EERHX are then compared with each other in terms of COP and exergy efficiency values. The obtained results are discussed for different superheating and subcooling degrees and various refrigerants, such as R134a, R32, and R410A. The present study shows that, in the EERHX system using R410A at condensation temperature of 45 °C and at evaporation temperature of 12 °C, the subcooling increased the rational exergy efficiency by 7.3% and decreased the exergy destruction rate by 2.5%. The highest rational exergy efficiency was obtained to be 29.7% for R134a; however, this efficiency was increased only by 0.1% in the case of using EERHX.
