The limited fossil fuel reserves have declined rapidly due to the increasing energy demand [1]. Moreover, these sources are not renewable and they cause environmental problems such as greenhouse gases [2]. As a consequence of these general concerns, scientists have focused on using algae as a renewable energy source. Biofuel, which is produced from biomass such as algae and plants, is an alternative solution for the energy crisis and climate change problems. Biofuel is divided into three generations based on their features. The first-generation fuels are known to compete with food production since they need agricultural lands and freshwater. The second-generation biofuels, which are converted to

energy by biological and thermochemical methods, also cause the same dilemma, and they are more restricted because of the higher costs of lignin removal [3]. However, the thirdgeneration feedstocks, such as microalgae and macroalgae, are becoming more attractive currently due to their advantages, such as no competition for arable land, reduction of global warming, and cultivation capacity throughout the year [46]. In the last few years, both micro- and macroalgae have been considered as third-generation fuel sources due to

their high biomass productivity and high lipid content
