Summary
Sand flies are insects of medical and veterinary importance because they are vectors of 20 Leishmania protozoan parasites and more than 60 arboviruses that threaten animal and human health. Today, more than one billion people live in areas endemic for leishmaniasis and are at risk of infection. Control of sand flies is a challenge because information on breeding sites is often limited due to difficulties in isolating the immature forms from the soil. Cultural and physical methods play a big role in managing sand fly populations in rural areas, which are often the hot spots for disease outbreaks. These methods are sustainable and require minimal expenditure compared to other methods.
