Özet

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.9, occurred in the north of Samos Island on October 30, 2020, causing significant damage in Izmir, the third most populous city in Turkey, with a population of nearly 5 million. The city is 70 km far from the earthquake epicenter, remind the possible effects of an earthquake will occur in an active fault passing through Izmir city center.

The Izmir Fault (IF), spanning 40 km, is the most important fault in the region. Halkapınar Springs, situated on the Pınarbaşı segment of the Izmir Fault Zone (IF), is one of the city's vital water resources. This study aims to determine radon concentrations in Halkapınar waters and assess their implications for seismic activity. Radon activity concentrations in water were measured using RAD7H2O equipment (Durridge, USA). Water samples were collected from wells in specially designed 250 ml bottles and analyzed in the laboratory. During measurements, water sample temperatures were recorded alongside radon levels.

This study is conducted as part of the collaboration between Ege University Nuclear Sciences Institute and IZSU (Izmir Water and Sewerage Administration General Directorate). It constitutes a part of İlayda SAPMAZ's master thesis, currently in preparation at the Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Ege University."
