Summary
Somatic motor neurons are the cholinergic neurons forming cell clusters in the ventral horn of the spinal cord. Thanks to these features, they can be easily recognized immunohistochemically and anatomically. However, these features are not sufficient to distinguish functional subtypes (alpha, beta, and gamma). Some of the protein markers to distinguish the alpha motor neurons from the gamma motor neurons in rodents are vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (VGLUT1), neuronal nuclear protein (NeuN), glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor family receptor alpha 1 (GFRA1), and estrogen-related receptor gamma (ESRRG).
