ABSTRACT: This article is about conscience in the Sufī thought of Muhāsibī, who lived in the third century AH and had the first systematic works of Sufīsm. Methodologically, the study was designed as an evaluation of the findings by determining what is known about conscience and its connection with the discourse and structures in works of Muhāsibī. In moral thought of Muhāsibī, conscience is explained on an ongoing level in the heart-damîr-sırr processes that begin with the encounter of the mind with knowledge. In the article, which draws attention to the conceptual problem, the course of realization of conscience is explained by focusing on the awareness and transformations that occur in the moralization processes that begin on the basis of the mind-heart and progress with the damîr-sırr. The concept of “damīr” in works of Muhāsibī has been accepted as an equivalent concept to conscience. This article may provide the opportunity to discuss conscience on a different conceptual level and to examine the unique perspective of Sufīsm on the subject.

Keywords: Sufīsm; Muhāsibī; wijdan; damīr; sırr; moral consciousness
