Summary

This study was carried out to determine the concentrations of some heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr and Fe) in Diopatra neapolitana (Delle Chiaje, 1841) and sediments in the middle region of İzmir Bay. In the two-year period between autumn 2002 and summer 2004, it has been determined that metal concentrations in D. neapolitana vary over time. The order of accumulation of metal concentrates in D. neapolitana was determined as Cd <Cr <Cu <Pb <Zn <Fe. The amount of Cr detected in the sediment is the only metal above the Effect Range Low (ERL) recommended in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, 1999) and the Sediment Triger Level (STV) specified in The Australian and New Zealand Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water Quality (ANZECC,2000). These indicate an intense industrial activity in the region. The order of the metal concentrations detected in the sediment samples was Cd <Pb <Cu <Cr <Zn <Fe. There was a statistically significant but weak correlation between concentrations of Cd and Cu in sediment and D. neapolitana.
