Özet

Kavakdere Valley-Seferihisar is one of important agricultural areas in west of Turkey. Agriculture is the main source of income for more than 80% of the population who live in the valley. In this study, we aimed to utilize Landsat-derived spectral vegetation indices such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), and Land Surface Water Index (LSWI) to determine possible effects of drought on three major crops: citrus, grape, and olive. While citrus and grape are irrigate, olive plantations are under rain fed management in the region. Our analysis focused on three years representing dry (2008), wet (2010), and normal (2015) climatic conditions. Results indicated that all three crops were affected by drought despite two being irrigated. However, grape and olive were more affected by drought than citrus. Also, results showed that more severe drought occurred during winter months because of lack of precipitation and irrigation. Our findings imply that the irrigation may be needed in winter months to stimulate vegetation growth. The irrigation applications in the drought year (2008) were not sufficient to alleviate the severe drought stress. Farmers need to accommodate the seasonality of the precipitation to maintain vegetation health.
