Summary

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the situation of sheep breeds bred in eight provinces in the Aegean Region with contemporary data that include the yield type, tail shape and origin. Material and Methods: In order to meet the above objective, the data obtained for 2021 through the HAYBIS system belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Turkey were used. These data are based on the sheep assets of the provinces in the Aegean region according to the classification of statistical regional units. Results: The total number of sheep in the Aegean Region is 5.318.635 while the total number of domestic sheep breeds is 4.876.130 heads, the total number of imported sheep is 442.505. The average of native sheep breeds belonging to 8 provinces in the Aegean Region is 607.011 and this number is 55.313 for culture breeds. The average of thin-tailed sheep in 8 provinces is 5.024.734 heads, and for fat-tailed sheep this value is 236.837 heads. The average of half-fat-tailed sheep is 57.064 heads. Conclusion: In order to make sustainable sheep production, regional and national sheep breeding strategies should be developed. In order to do this, it is necessary to determine the current situation and to reveal the numbers and ratios on the basis of regions. It is believed that the findings obtained from this study will be beneficial for the breeding studies to be carried out based on the breed in our country
