Summary

The aim of this study was to determine the main factors that limit the sustainability of the existing animal husbandry in 15 rural settlements in the north and south of the Bornova district of İzmir province, to evaluate its conformity to animal husbandry and to propose suggestions for its sustainability. Firstly, the factors limiting sustainability were determined by the survey conducted with the village headmen. Then, the suitability for animal husbandry was determined using the query model developed in the ArcGIS.

The limiting factors in the northern region are insufficiency of rangelands and water resources, rural tourism activities, and forest and protected areas. The limiting factors in the southern region are the shortage of rangelands and water resources, the rapid growth of the industry, the existing forest areas and quarries.

According to the query model results, in the northern region, it was determined that animal husbandry would not be suitable according to criteria such as the land use class not being suitable (74.3% of the area), the forest area covering a large area (59.3%) and the presence of stone/lime quarries (44%). The area in the southern region was determined to be unsuitable for animal husbandry according to criteria such as land use class (86.5%), land slope direction (83.1%) and its proximity to settlements (74.1%). For the development and sustainability of animal husbandry, the creation of a mass animal husbandry zone, away from the effects of these factors, and also the development of rangelands will be able to provide significant contributions
