Summary

This article presents findings, discussions, and recommendations on a bridge in Adana-Karaisalı and two bridges—unknown today—built where the Karaisalı bridge once stood. The research used photographs, survey/restitution drawings, methods such as on-site field surveys, literature and archival review, and oral history. The results and evaluations contribute to the Art History literature and are important for local history. The Kapıkaya (Çakıt-2) Bridge at the southeastern end of Kapıkaya Canyon has a main span, gently sloping in both directions, and a flat plan. It was built in 1945, which corresponds to the middle of the Second National Architecture Period. Its rustic façade pattern, consisting of horizontal stone rows with beveled, grouted joints, reflects the features of this art/architectural movement. The main arch is in the form of an arch/segment, which entered the Ottoman architectural repertoire with the revivalist style influences of Westernization. The remains of other piers at the foot of the bridge, distinguished by different materials, construction techniques, and additions, suggest the existence of an earlier bridge. A photograph found in the Yıldız Albums has proven a wooden bridge resting on masonry piers in the same location. A detailed analysis shows there was another masonry-arched bridge even before this wooden bridge. Accordingly, a single-arched stone bridge dating from the late 17th to the 19th century was built there, followed by a “wooden bridge” with various additions, and finally, the Kapıkaya Bridge in 1945.

Keywords: bridge, Ottoman bridges, Second National Architecture Period, Adana, water structures, çakip bridge, kapikaya bridge
