Summary

The Italians, after their national unity had been secured by the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861, pursued a colonial policy like the other Great Powers of Europe. The Italians, in the direction of colonial policy, declared war on the Ottoman Empire on September 29, 1911 to seize Tripoli which was the last Ottoman possession in North Africa. But the Italian army came to a deadlock in the face of unexpected resistance in Tripoli. Therefore Italians decided to force the Ottoman government to peace table by widening the conflict to Aegean Sea through the use of their vastly superior navy. In the direction of this decision, they attacked on the Dardanelles Strait on 18 April 1912. However Italian naval attack on the Strait ended in a disaster on military level. In this article, the defence of Orhaniye fort against the Italian naval attack will be analysed and Gunner Corporal Yusuf (Erdil) will be introduced to the scientific literature with his remarkable role in this defence.
