Özet
This chapter provides an extensive insight into hybridization methods of silica aerogels and their use in energy applications. It overviews general hybridization techniques of silica aerogel according to recent literature, and addresses the thermal characteristics of different hybrid aerogels and their role in energy saving applications. Hybridization of silica aerogels is without doubt the most popular method, both for strengthening purposes and for exploration of new functionalities of the materials through synergistic combinations of the inorganic and organic moieties. For the mechanical improvement of silica aerogels, hybridization by cross-linking the solid skeleton through surface silanol groups with polymers is a frequently used method. Silica-based aerogels are the most promising advanced materials as thermal superinsulators owing to their ultraporous morphology and very low thermal conductivity. However, their inherently low mechanical characteristics severely hinders their practical applications as insulators.
