Özet

Postmodern narratives' interest in multiple worlds, and collective or fragmented identities is clearly manifested in the films of David Lynch, where the reality/fantasy dimension and the material reality bear no clear boundaries.Nor are there any means present to make such boundaries discernible.Realities that are interpreted as the illusion of a character are such perfect parodies of certain cinematic genres, cliches, images and themes that they are considered to only be possible in film-world or a fantasy. The main concern of the narrative seems to be an investigation of possibilities of how a reality, edited as a film, would look.If a reality is reconstructed as a fantasy/narrative, and if we allow a reality dimension that precedes this fantasy and is constructed as if adapted from the fantasy, what sort of imagery would the resulting narrative be based on?As such, David Lynch films cannot be defined as a meta-film about films with narratives based on irony or parody and focusing on history of filmmaking, and genre films, clichés and archetypes. While the director's movies create the impression of an attainable distinctive between the narrative and fiction, on a deeper level, they invalidate the reality/fantasy diction by excluding the external gaze that corresponds to material reality. Thus, the films give the main logic of postmodern narratives full reign; as they reveal that what we call reality is based on fictions, or rather a plurality of fictions. In this paper, David Lynch films are examined in terms of properties of postmodernity and postmdern filmmaking they entail. For the theoretical framework of this thematic study, literature pertaining to postmodernity and postmodern films is going to be utilized. In this regard, the director's films are examined through studies in postmodern narration and aesthetics, with a focus on narrative structure and the formal qualities of the narrative.
