Özet

In this study, finite element analysis was used to investigate the fatigue behavior of eight different hip stems under body weight during gait. All of the prostheses investigated in the analysis are already being used in Turkish orthopedics surgery. All stems were compared with each other in terms deformation and safety factors. First, the femur was modeled by using computer tomography, and then finite element analysis was applied to determine the minimum safety factor of fatigue, critical fatigue areas of stems. In the analysis, physical contacts between joints of the bipolar cups were simulated by contact algorithm. Tetrahedral finite elements were used during the analysis. The materials of cortical bones and hip stem are taken from literature, and selected as isotropic. To obtain a more realistic simulation, boundary and loading conditions for a gait cycle including hip contact and muscle forces were applied. Three different types of stem material were selected for the analysis. These materials were Ti-6Al-4V, cobalt chrome alloy and 316L. The current study has demonstrated that analyzing hip stems with the finite element method can be used on computer models before applying to patients. In addition to that the FEM could be used for preclinical studies. This procedure reduces design time and helping to prevent permanent damage caused by implementation. Further studies may expand the simulations to the clinical relevance due to complex physical environment of the problem.
