Background The aim of the current study is to evaluate and compare the surgical discomfort, postoperative pain and clinical results of osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) technique in conjunction with short implants either performed with a magnetic mallet or a hand mallet. Aim/Hypothesis The aim of the current study is to evaluate and compare the surgical discomfort, postoperative pain and clinical results of osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) technique in conjunction with short implants either performed with a magnetic mallet or a hand mallet. Material and Methods A total of 14 patient (9 males, 5 females, age mean ± std- 45 ± 12) with bilateral single tooth gap in maxillary posterior area with residual bone height <6 mm below maxillary sinuses were included in the study. Both sites received one short implant after OSFE either performed with a magnetic mallet (Test Group) or a hand mallet (Control Group). Surgical discomfort, postoperative pain during the first week, vitality of neighboring teeth, surgical time, number of mallet hits required for OSFE and sinus lifting amounts were evaluated. Results Surgical discomfort was significantly lower in Test Group (P < 0.05). Similarly, postoperative pain during the 2nd, 4th and 5th days were significantly lower in Test Group (P < 0.05) Number of hits needed for OSFE was significantly lower in the magnetic mallet group (P < 0.05), while the complication rates and other clinical parameters did not differ both within and between groups. Conclusion and Clinical Implications OSFE performed with magnetic mallet seems to create less discomfort and less postoperative pain. Even though both techniques seem to be safe for OSFE, magnetic mallet may have the potential to replace the hand mallet.
