Summary

In this work, the reign of Empress Zoe from Macedonian dynasty and her third husband Constantinos Monomachos IX who were historical personalities symbolizing the brightest era of eleventh century Byzantine is discussed in an integrity with delineating cultural, political events and artistic aspects of the era concerned. Zoe married with third husband at her sixties was a very pious, philantropic as much as her being scamp was a woman spending all her days while making perfumes in her room. As to her husband, Constantinos Monomakhos IX., although he was a man of literature, generousity, politeness and good will, he certainly lacked of the qualities of a statesman. During the reign of Zoe and her husband, administrative, military and financial structures of the state had been utterly neglected and many military defeats and failures were experienced. As parallel to these ill-success, the separation of Western and Eastern Churches had reached its final phase. In spite of all these infirmities, Constantinapolis became one of the most important cultural center of the era with its investments on art and science. Besides the interesting personalities of Empress Zoe and Constantinos Monamachos IX, another interesting situation was about Zoe’s husband’s mistress, Maria whom she was called from exile by Zoe upon his husband’s request and lived in Byzantine Palace, although Zoe was well known as her jelaousy and cruelty.

Key words: Empress Zoe, Empreror Constantinos Monomachos IX, Byzantine State, Macedonian Dynasty.
