Aquaponics are sustainable and environmentally friendly recirculating aquaculture systems that

include fish, plants, and bacteria. In aquaponics, there are two major waste products obtained

from aquaculture tanks and hydroponics which are fish feces and plant stalks, respectively. In this

study, three different green microalgae species were cultured using the utilization of sludge water

after the remineralization process from aquaculture tanks instead of being discharged into the

environment. In the hydroponics unit, lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and in the aquaculture tank African

catfish (Clarias gariepinus) were used to perform aquaponics. Chlorella minutissima,

Haematococcus pluvialis, and Botryococcus braunii production performances were evaluated in

remineralized sludge water (RSW) and remineralized sludge water + trace elements (RSW+Tr).

Then these groups were compared to the production performances of BG-11 (Rippka and

Herdman, 1993) culture mediums. Cell concentrations (cell/mL), specific growth rates (μ),

biomass doubling times (td), dry biomass productivities (Pb), total lipids (%), crude proteins (%),

and total carbohydrates (%) of microalgae species were investigated. At the end of the culture

period (28 days). Group BG-11 for Chlorella minutissima had the highest number of cells with

nearly 27 x 10 6 ± 12 x 10 6 cells/mL on the 27th day of the trial. The maximum specific growth

rate (µ) was determined in the group of BG-11 for Chlorella minutissima as well. The highest

crude protein and total lipid contents were calculated in the RSW group for Chlorella

minutissima at 55.77±1.81% and 4.69±0.88%, respectively. The highest total carbohydrate ratio

was determined as 39.14±2.43% in the group of RSW in Botryococcus braunii culture. In this

study, the RSW culture medium was found to be a successful alternative microalgae culture

medium over the BG-11 culture medium for Chlorella minutissima and Botryococcus braunii.
