Özet

Land use/land cover (LU/LC) change serves as an important indicator for detecting and understanding landscape transformations due to its influence on the complex and dynamic processes within natural and social systems on a global scale. In this context, the aim of this study is to perform a spatio-temporal analysis of landscape dynamics between the years of 1990-2020 in Izmir province of Seferihisar district using landscape metrics. The study used Landsat 5 TM (1990) and Landsat 8 OLI (2020) satellite imagery to generate LU/LC maps. LU/LC maps, including eight LU/LC types - urban area, forest area, agricultural area, bare areas, grassland, maquis, gariggue and water and wetlands were created using pixel-based classification. To analyze the spatio-temporal changes in landscape dynamics, the landscapemetrics package in R was used to calculate seven landscape metrics for the categorical landscape patterns in the study area. These metrics included Class Area (CA), Number of Patches (NP), Patch Density (NP), Edge Density (ED), Patch Area (AREA_MN), Shape Index (SI), Effective Mesh Size (MESH), and Mean Euclidean Nearest Neighbour Distance (ENN_MN). It is observed that the changes predominantly occur in natural and semi-natural areas, and it has been found that these changes were mainly due to post-fire afforestation in the study area. Afforested regions positively affected the landscape, but agricultural expansion and urbanization caused fragmentation and compaction. The study will contribute to future land management and planning efforts by offering insights into the dynamics of LU/LC changes in the Seferihisar district of Izmir province. This will provide the basis for the development of sustainable land use practices and conservation strategies for the region in the future.
